Just in time for Mardi Gras!
The Kings Cake is a New Orleans tradition that involves a pastry, a small plastic baby, and a party. The Kings Cake is baked with a small plastic baby hidden inside, the person who gets the slice with baby in it is blessed AND has to host the next party.
Well, we love parties so this is great!
Kings Cake Bread Pudding
1-2 French bread loaves & 4 croissants
2 sticks of unsalted butter, melted
3 cups of 2% milk
4 eggs, beaten
2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup chocolate chips
½ cup white chocolate chips
One plastic baby
Directions
Cut the bread into chunks and leave out, uncovered, overnight
This will dry it out and make it hard, which makes it easier for the bread to soak up the mixture.
toss the bread with melted butter inside the 9″ by 11″ pan.
Let stand until bread soaks up most of the butter
Beat eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla & cinnamon and blend into the eggs.
Hide your baby!!
Pour liquid mixture over bread into pan let sit for about an hour or until liquid is absorbed.
Add chocolate chips on top, evenly.
Add a layer of each colored sugar in stripes or whatever pattern you like on top. Once its done baking I like to add more colored sugar.
Bake at 300 degrees for one hour or until firm
